Top things to do in Seville

The Seville Cathedral is the world's largest Gothic cathedral, built to showcase the city's wealth and influence as a major trading center. After more than a century of construction, it was completed in 1506 and overtook the Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral at the time.

The cathedral stands on the site of a former mosque, with parts of the original structure still visible today. The La Giralda, the cathedral's bell tower, was originally a minaret of the Almohad Mosque. After the Christian conquest of Seville, the tower was repurposed but retained its Moorish design.

You can explore the vast interiors, admire the detailed altarpiece, and climb the La Giralda for panoramic views of Seville. An audio guide provides historical insights, helping you understand the cathedral’s rich past at your own pace.

The Retablo Mayor

This is the world's largest Gothic altarpiece, at 20 meters tall and 18 meters across. The Flemish craftsman Pierre Dancart spent 44 years carving the intricate details from walnut and chestnut before covering them in gold leaf. The altarpiece is protected by a wrought iron grille, but you can still admire the craftsmanship through its bars.

The tomb of Christopher Columbus

Columbus' remains are housed in an elaborate tomb, carried by statues representing the kingdoms of Aragon, Castille, Leon, and Navarra. His body was moved multiple times before finally resting in Seville in 1892. DNA tests confirm the remains indeed belong to the famed Italian explorer.

La Giralda

The cathedral's bell tower was once the minaret of the Almohad Mosque that stood on this site. The tower stands at 104 meters (343 feet), with a series of ramps instead of stairs, built wide enough for guards on horseback. From the top, you get a panoramic view of Seville’s historic center.

Patio de los Naranjos

This courtyard was part of the original mosque, where worshippers would wash before prayers. It remains a peaceful space with orange trees and fountains.

The cathedral’s chapels

The Seville Cathedral has 80 chapels, with some larger than entire churches. Many house historical artworks, including pieces by Murillo and Goya. Masses are still held in several chapels today.

Frequently asked questions about the Seville Cathedral audio guide

Why should I choose an audio-guided tour of the Seville Cathedral?

An audio-guided tour gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace while still getting all the important historical insights. You won’t have to stick to a group schedule, meaning you can linger at your favorite spots, skip sections you find less interesting, and take breaks whenever you want.

How long does the tour take?

This is a self-paced experience, so the duration depends on how long you spend at each section. Most visitors take between 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the cathedral and climb La Giralda. Anyone with a penchant for history and architecture could easily spend 2-3 hours here.

Can I climb the La Giralda with this ticket?

Yes! Your ticket includes access to La Giralda, the cathedral’s iconic bell tower. The climb is unique because it has ramps instead of stairs, making the ascent easier than most towers. From the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Seville.

What’s the difference between an audio-guided tour and a guided tour?

With an audio guide, you can explore the cathedral at your own pace, pause when you like, and revisit sections that interest you the most. A guided tour, on the other hand, follows a fixed route with a live guide who provides expert commentary and answers questions.
